Breast reduction (mammoplasty) or a breast lift (mastopexy)
Breast reduction (mammoplasty) or a breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure to reshape the breast contour by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue, the areola being reshaped as well. This leaves a circular scar around the nipple area, with a line down to the submammary groove. Over time, these scars will lighten in color and become less noticeable. Breast reduction and breast lift are meant to resolve such issues as chronic back pain, skin irritation under the breast, nerve pain, breast that have lost shape and volumes or have gotten flatter and longer, breast of disproportionate sizes. There are several different methods. The surgeon will discuss them with you to help you make the best choice
The surgery uses tracheal intubation and it can take 2 to 3 hours.
At women, the breast is reduced by removing part of the mammary gland and excess skin. The mammary areola is normally also reduced. This leaves a circular scar around the nipple area, with a line down to the submammary groove. Over time, these scars will lighten in color and become less noticeable. There are several different methods. The surgeon will discuss them with you to help you make the best choice.
At men, excess mammary gland tissue is removed through a periareolar incision or liposuction. What are the risks? In some cases, the sensitivity is lowered after a breast lift operation. Although they may remain permanent, they usually return after a few months. Necrosis of the areola or only part of it is the cause of a circulation problem. Smoking is an immediate cause of this result. Smokers can reduce this risk by quitting smoking three weeks before surgery and another three weeks after surgery. But loss of consciousness and the appearance of circulatory problems have not become a habit. In patients at high risk for this problem, the operating technique may be modified to reduce the risks. Usually complications are rare and the result is long lasting.
Recovery period
The breasts are well bandaged immediately after a lifting or breast reduction operation. A drainage tube is inserted under each of these bandages to help remove the blood or fluid that has formed. The tubes are removed after 24-48 hours. We advise you to wear the bustier during the day and at night for a few weeks after the operation. The sutures are usually removed two weeks after surgery. After a week, you can resume some of your daily activities, although it is best to wait three weeks for all other activities to resume.
Can I still breastfeed after a breast lift or lowering operation?
In most cases, breastfeeding is still possible after such operations. However, it also depends on the technique used during the operation. If this is important to you, please talk to your plastic surgeon at the pre-surgery consultation.
